Maersk Air Cargo Welcomes First Boeing 777F Aircraft – A Fleet Milestone

Maersk Air Cargo has officially received the first of its two new Boeing 777 freighters, with the second expected to arrive by the end of September.

The 777F was handed over to Maersk at Boeing’s headquarters in Seattle, USA. According to a press release, Maersk Air Cargo plans to fly the freighter to its hub at Billund Airport (BLL) in Denmark, where it is scheduled to land on July 13.

Maersk placed the order for the two 777Fs in November 2021 as part of its ongoing fleet modernization strategy. The second aircraft is slated for delivery later in the third quarter. At this point, Maersk Air Cargo’s fleet will include two 777Fs and 20 Boeing 767Fs.

Both 777Fs will be deployed on Maersk’s route from BLL to Hangzhou, China (HGH). The company will initially offer three weekly flights and plans to increase this to six weekly flights. Maersk stated that adding these aircraft will boost capacity and reduce transit and handling times at both origin and destination airports.

As highlighted by Maersk, this marks the first time a Danish airline has owned a Boeing 777. Maersk launched its air cargo division in April 2022, with Maersk Air Cargo commencing operations at the end of October 2022. In March 2023, the airline began scheduled flights from BLL to HGH.

Maersk Air Cargo also applied for a UK operating license in April of this year. The company explained to Air Cargo News that this application was made to “support our ongoing business activities in Europe and the UK,” with operations to be handled by 767F aircraft.

        First 777 Freighter Aircraft

Lars Jordahn, head of Maersk Air Cargo, expressed enthusiasm about the delivery: “We are thrilled to receive these aircraft, which represent a significant upgrade to our fleet. The 777F is one of the largest and most reliable freighters available, and with its GE90 engines, it is also the most fuel-efficient.”

Narin Phol, executive vice president and chief product officer (CPO) for logistics and services at Maersk, added: “From a commercial standpoint, the introduction of the 777Fs is a major advancement for our air freight services. These aircraft will allow us to offer more efficient route structuring and increased capacity, meeting the growing demand for integrated supply chain solutions.
