The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is set to revoke the certifications of over 15,000 physicians responsible for certifying the fitness of truck drivers.
While some medical examiners may only need to reactivate their National Registry accounts, others may require additional training to regain their certification status. This move comes as part of FMCSA’s efforts to ensure the competency and compliance of medical examiners in the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
Medical examiners who fail to update their National Registry accounts using login.gov by February 26 will have their names removed from the registry. Despite repeated attempts by FMCSA to contact inactive examiners, many have yet to respond or access their accounts, raising concerns about their ability to fulfill regulatory requirements. Approximately 92,625 certified medical examiners are listed on the registry, with 38,707 actively conducting physical qualification examinations and reporting results.
Website Security Improvements
Brian Morris, an FMCSA medical review board member, emphasized the importance of website security and compliance with government programs to strengthen security measures. The agency has improved the website since identifying technology-related challenges in late 2017. While the obstacles persisted for several years, FMCSA announced they were resolved in 2023 after a nearly four-year rebuild. This action aims to ensure the reliability and integrity of the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners in safeguarding the health and safety of commercial motor vehicle drivers.
